We’ve already spent too much to stop” is one of the hardest sentences in project management. The feeling behind it is understandable: hours of work, hopes, and perhaps personal embarrassment. But it can persuade us to keep funding a project whose prospects no longer convince us.
Suppose a company has paid to develop a product and then discovers that completing and supporting it will cost more than expected. Earlier spending matters when assessing what happened and learning from it. Adding more money will not bring it back. Today’s decision should compare future spending and likely benefits with the available alternatives.
Continuing may be right. The product could be nearly ready, with a reasonable remaining cost. Redesigning it or selling some assets might be better than closing it altogether. Choose among those routes by examining what remains, including withdrawal commitments and the effect on employees and customers. Past spending alone should not make the case.
Companies need a way to end projects without humiliating the people who started them. If stopping is treated as proof of incompetence, people will conceal bad news and ask for another round of funding. A fair review protects the decision maker as well as the business. It also lets the team put what it has learned to better use elsewhere.
