When a shop owner buys inventory software, the number of screens may matter less than the fear of selling something that is out of stock. Perhaps the owner wants to go home without checking the accounts again. Product specifications matter, but they cannot fully explain the purchase.
I start with the customer’s situation. What are they trying to do? What keeps causing trouble? How do they handle it now? The alternative may be another application, a notebook, or an employee spending hours on follow-up. Ignoring that alternative can lead us to overestimate the improvement we offer.
These questions change both design and communication. Instead of announcing dozens of functions, explain how the system helps check availability before accepting an order, and demonstrate it. We might discover that a small feature, such as an understandable alert or readable report, deserves more attention than a complex function the intended audience rarely uses.
Empathy alone is not enough. Check whether the problem matters enough to prompt a change, and whether the customer is willing and able to pay. Sometimes the product is good but the problem is a low priority. The offer then needs reviewing at its foundations, before we add a more attractive marketing sentence to the page.
